On Tuesday, I went in for a visit with my psychiatrist. I had changed into my workout clothes while I was at work, just in case I ran out of time. I'm glad I did. I didn't get in to my 4:00 appointment until shortly after 5. I mentioned to my shrink that I was doing pretty well, and that I recently started an exercise program. He asked me if I had been losing weight, and I told him not much yet, but that I hoped that would change with some extra effort. He then asked me if I would be willing to try a simple diet with supplements. I made the mistake of saying that I would. He had me weigh myself. Granted, I was dressed, but only in light-weight workout pants and t-shirt, so I was disappointed to see the scale level off at 216. I felt someone defeated. He basically told me that Zyprexa, one of the medicines I am taking, changes your metabolism and effects the way your body handles calories. He briefly explained to me that it would be a low-carb diet. I asked him if it was something similar to Atkins, but I guess he didn't hear me because he just kept writing something in my file. He did tell me that he had one patient who lost 10 pounds in one week on this diet. He then sent me to the front desk and told me that he'd meet me there in a minute with my supplements. After waiting a little bit, he joined me at the counter with a big bottle of Xymogen protein shake powder and gave me a pamphlet explaining what I could and couldn't eat. He then left me, and I paid my copay plus $70 for the magical supplement. I'm supposed to return in 2 weeks to rejoice in the wonders this supplement will no doubt work in my body.
I didn't really get a chance to thoroughly read the pamphlet until I got home after my workout that evening. On a side note, before I left the gym, I asked my Krav instructor how long his cardio class. He told me it was a full hour, and implied that it was pretty intense. He then told me to just hit Krav really hard for two more weeks, and then add the cardio to it back to back. I'll take his advice. My body was having a really hard time with my Tuesday Krav workout. It was still very sore from Monday's cardio class, and it still is. So, two more weeks, then cardio.
Anyways, I read the pamphlet after I got home and became horribly depressed by what I read. It's basically a gluten-free, dairy-free diet, with a list of a bunch of other things you can't eat. No more whole-wheat pasta. No potatoes. No garlic, no salt, which kinda throws out some of my basic seasonings. No raspberries (so no more raspberry vinagrette), no citrus, no strawberries, no mango, which kills my occasional fruit smoothie treats. No sweetened fruit drinks. No brown sugar, no honey, no artificial sweeteners, etc. No beef or pork. No bouillon-based soups. No tomatoes or peppers of any kind, which are a staple of mine. And a bunch of other no-nos.
I broke the bad news to my sweetie. We had one last dinner of wheat spaghetti and went shopping for diet-safe items. I was in a foul mood because of the whole thing, and it was only made worse my the feeling that I was coming down with a cold. I was also pretty pissy, because I weighed myself at home, and it verified what the doc's scale said (pretty much). The ugly number was 215. I told myself it was because I hadn't pooped.
Yesterday, I went home sick from work. Achy, worn-out, sniffly, sore throat, etc. A crappy day to start a new diet. And those damned shakes are horrible. The idea is. that you have 5-7 small meals a day. It starts off with breakfast always being a shake. Then it progresses to nothing but shakes for all snacks and meals for days 12-14. Then it goes down to 2 a day. I have a special schedule to follow. And I'm already hating it. Last night, I had horrible diarrhea, and I really want to blame it on my shake. Funny thing is, though, I weighed myself this morning, in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, and my weight was 211. Checked again, because sometimes your stance can throw off the scale, and it came up with 211.5. So I stripped down to my undies to take my nekkid weight: 209.5. Either the diet was already working, or it was the diarrhea from the night before. Or maybe a combination of both. I still think they're linked.
Last night's supper: grilled salmon with dry salad with a few walnuts thrown in (no bleu cheese, no dried cranberries, no raspberry vinagrette allowed).
I stayed home sick today. Had a few slices of Boar's head chicken (from the allowed list). Some walnuts here and there. An apple. A few grapes. And yes, I started off with that dreaded shake. I hope to God I get used to them. I'm hungry now, and was looking forward to making a couple of tuna steaks for dinner. Unfortunately, I must have gotten confused at the store, because they are on my no-no list. I thought fresh tuna would surely be allowed, but I was wrong. So I guess it's bison burgers with no buns tonight. And let me just verify that really quick—yes, bison is allowed.
Fortunately, this diet is only 28 days. At least, it specifically states "The plan should not be followed beyond 28 days without proper reassessment." So, in other words, unless my doc hates me, this will be over with in one month. So wish me luck.
I'm starting to feel a little more alive this evening, so hopefully I'll be back at work, and working out, tomorrow.
Please keep me up to date because I just started this diet today. I really had a hard time with the taste of the shake. I am on the OptiCleanse Plus. Hope I can stay with it.

ReplyDeleteIt gets easier to swallow as you go along. Today, I finally didn't gag while drinking the shake for the first time since I started this diet. I find that the colder it is, the easier it goes down. I put in an ice cube or two when I shake up the mixture.
I am on day 4 it hasn't been as bad the last day & 1/2. I added mint flavor to mine and its
ReplyDeletebetter but agree colder the better. I started the shake for my lunch today. I picked banana flavor and it was pretty good. Hope you are feeling better. This is the first diet I have ever done and its a full time job just thinking about it. Not saying I shouldn't have tried one but never have. That alone is hard besides the diet. I just keep thinking of the the things I can have not what I can't. Please keep me posted it looks like the days with very little food are yet to come. Thanks and GOOD LUCK.
dg
Good luck to you, too, dg! I'll have to try the mint trick. That might help my chocolate shakes. It definitely helps to know that someone else is going through the same thing.
ReplyDeleteHope you are still doing good. Sorry I live in the country and do not have computer access except on few days. I am on day 11 and doing good. I start fasting/shake days tomorrow. I had to go to the dr office for more supplies and since May when she first told me to go on this diet I have lost 12 pounds. Hope more are to come off. I am so surprised that I am not that hungry. Let me know how you are doing!

I am on day 2 and so far so good. I dreaded doing this so much but it is better than I thought it would be but it is only day 2. I have a stomach I cannot get rid of and am really resistant to losing weight- it is frustrating. The doctor put me on this to get my body straightened out and maybe wake up my metabolism. I was bummed when you put that you could not have garlic and could not find it but to my relief, you can have garlic and the hummus is going to be my saving grace. :) What was your total outcome when you finished the 28 days?
ReplyDeleteDEC.11,2010 I'M ON DAY 5 AND I'VE BEEN LOOSING ABOUT A POUND A DAY. I'M ON THE CLEANSE BECAUSE I HAVE SOME SEVERE ALLERGY AND HARMONE PROBLEMS. THE QUESTION I HAVE FOR ANYONE IS MY DOCTOR IS CHARGING ME $60. FOR THE CONTAINER OF OPTICLEANSE GHI. THERE ARE ONLY 14 - 2 SCOOP SERVINGS. WHAT DID YOU OR ANY OF YOU OUT THERE PAYING FOR THIS CLEANSE?
ReplyDeleteI paid $40 through my homeopath
DeleteWow I'm on the i5 energize n its $50-70 I believe...we need recipes!!! I add pumpkin pie spice to my shake or cinnamon or sometimes unsweetened applesauce couple spoons
DeleteWow I'm on the i5 energize n its $50-70 I believe...we need recipes!!! I add pumpkin pie spice to my shake or cinnamon or sometimes unsweetened applesauce couple spoons
DeleteYep, the price is about right. I've snorkled the internet and you might get it for a couple bucks less. Whatcha all complaining about, the taste? Call me crazy, but I like it! I've got the green tea flavor, toss in 1/2 banana (frozen is better) and 1-2 handfuls of blueberries or blackberries (again, frozen is better)--my doc said no strawberries, but raspberries are ok? Is pineapple? Not on my good or bad list. I whup it good in an Oster blender--oh! If you're feeling deprived, toss in a small handful (small, darling, I said small!) of blanched almonds or cashews. Your doc is nuts re:10 pounds in 1 week--NOT healthy--if true, it's mostly water. But for sure, 3-4 pounds a week. Those shakes me me not hungry. It's weird, to be not hungry. I like the concept.
ReplyDeleteOh--fergot--
ReplyDeleteDo y'all add 2 tablespoons of something with the breakfast shake? Can't remember what it's called...I think it's got a bunch of flax in it. Turns me into a pooh bear...
One other thing--my friend is in the 2nd month, has lost about 15 pounds, and has gone from being a 3-toed sloth hanging upside down from the don't-bug-me tree (had to poke her with a stick to get her to crack open an eye and glare at me) to Lady High-Energy. She su-wares it's the shakes.
I just started this and I already feel better (day 2). I've had no coffee and I feel great. I just wish we weren't having 10 people for dinner tomorrow night! It's gonna be difficult.
ReplyDeleteI finished my 28 day cleanse and lost 14 pounds. I like the taste of the vanilla shake and the diet was no problem. My mindset was ready GO. Two weeks later, I am adding things to my food list and still losing weight and I feel good. Lots of energy.
ReplyDeleteMy nutritionist said that I could make mine into a smoothie with straw/bannanas. If you put Almond Milk ( Orginal Blend) with it, it taste good becuase the milk is sweet. And its not dairy. I have been gluten free for a month. I have found that Wholefoods has a gluten free white bread that is really good. ( you have to warm it up first for like 15 sec in the microwave) I am not sick as much. Now if my hormones level out maybe I'll get pregnant! Good Luck on your diet!
ReplyDeleteI've been on OptiClense Plus for about 3 months and stopped because the sugar in it was causing candida problems and slowing my weight loss. Then one day I decided to have a small shake of it. I suffered nausea and pain for about an hour and then threw it all up. My doctor blamed it on tainted leftovers (whatever!). Here it is about 3 weeks later, thought I'd have another small shake since I've been doing good with whole foods alone but didn't have time to cook today... and yep again with the nausea for several hours this time and then diarrhea and then I threw every bit of it back up. I hadn't had any leftovers and I had no other stomach "bugs". It feels like I'm not able to digest anymore. I was always a little skeptical of it because it's made of rice protein.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous and every one else on this cleanse program,
DeleteMy husband was just put on this cleanse with many other ordered supplements to treat liver disease. It has only been 5 days but he seems to be managing it all okay, however, the chocolate flavor is TOO chocolatey, he says. The only options available from his doctor are choc, vanilla, and chai. Will try vanilla next time.He has to drink 2 shakes per day. What I am wondering Anonymous, is HOW you knew that the shakes were giving you candida problems? Is this something the doctor observed,or by tests,or what? As I would think this program and detoxification process would relieve the symptoms, if not wipe-out the candida altogether, not cause it! This is the ONE thing I have always been concerned about,as candida causes a myriad of other health problems. Sugars in ANY form can be just one cause of candida(as is overuse of antibiotics), and there IS cane sugar in the shake mix!Since bananas are very high in sugars, and a known fungus food(which candida IS a fungus), I am wondering if the bananas themselves have somewhat been causing your problem? I am so confused now. Anyhow, if you would like to share an update on your progress, I would love to read about it, and anyone else who cares to share.Thank you.
Try getting the vanilla, and use 1/2 cup frozen blueberries and a half cup frozen peaches. Use 1/2 cup of hemp milk and 1/2 cup of rice milk. My homeopathic doctor did the cleanse herself (which made me feel more confident that it was safe). She gave me her list of foods - this was by far the best morning shake. I grew to love them in a few short mornings - and oh so full! The hemp milk gives it a nice touch of sweet.
ReplyDeleteHi Meredith,
DeleteMy husband will definitely try the vanilla next time, thanks for the input on that! I hope you are doing well on this program for whatever reason you started. My husband is also a newbie,he started on the 14th of August, (not as a weight-loss program though). Was wondering maybe if you could share your list of foods that your doctor gave you? The pamphlet for the 28 day cleanse is pretty self explanatory I know, however, I am still at a loss. The list of foods allowed is SO strict, I was wondering if possibly your doc has some good ideas as far as a menu plan goes? My husband is disabled b/c of medical condition,(previous post)and can not stand on his feet for any length of time, and I am far too busy to scour the internet and cookbooks for good recipes every day. It would be absolutely ideal if I could cook ahead and freeze meals even, but I know this may not be possible since 50-75% of his diet SHOULD BE, raw, whole foods. Any help from anyone on this and all progress reports will be greatly appreciated.thank you and good luck.I hope all of you here are doing well!!
What do you do if you are a vegetarian for the protein part?
ReplyDeleteStarted yesterday. was sick all day and night with flu like symptoms. I do not have the diet down yet and will read the information one more time. Let you know how this goes.
ReplyDeleteI've been doing the opticleanse (doc charges $50 per container) for about 3 weeks now. I have a million food allergies (apparently) and hormone imbalances which were making me feel like sh*t. Doc said I must do powder shakes for 3 months (minimum) and then get retested. I'm taking about 9 supplements too (including digestive enzymes), extra kelp, extra B-3, etc. I have "auto-immune thyroiditis" which is being (at least in part) caused by the anti-bodies in my blood that are combatting the food allergens. It's a real mess!! anyway, my question to anyone else out there doing this is, are you having horrible headaches? I was wondering if the shake causes headaches due to de-toxification. Also, how do you get the proper fat in your diet? I cannot have any dairy products or eggs or beef. I don't weigh much to begin with (110) and I'm afraid I'll lose too much weight.
ReplyDeleteHi Anon - If you haven't already found out, some organic, extra-virgin coconut oil would be good if you're worried about getting enough fat. Recommended by my alt med M.D.
DeleteHi Anonymous,
DeleteThe shakes shouldn't be causing headaches but sometimes the withdrawal of certain foods and beverages you normally would consume, could be causing the headaches. They should go away, but if they don't you should talk to your doctor. I am about to start this diet. I have had mercury and lead poising in my brain since I was young and the damage it has caused has brought me to this point.
@Tummy208 - You can't have tuna because fish (especially tuna) have high levels of toxins and these diets are about ridding your body of all the contamination that can actually lead to weight gain.
I have been experience extremely low energy and falling asleep anytime, anywhere... even when I am driving. My holistic MD thinks it could be an abundance of yeast in my body, which attaches to Toxins and its a vicious circle. In turn, it makes me retain and gain weight no matter my diet or exercise program. I was instructed to follow the diet for 3 months. after 1-month I can start to slowly add things back in. I have a gluten & wheat allergy, soy allergy, cow's milk allergy and sensitivity to many other random foods.
If done properly, these cleanses generally work and actually make you feel better and lose weight. Some doctors recommend the cleanse without the shakes. so, for the people having issues handling the shakes, you should ask your doctors if you are better off just sticking with the restricted diet.
I will look forward to seeing peoples progress all with my own.
Hi to all....for healthy fat, my doctor has me eating avocados, walnuts, almonds, and I had salmon for part of my protein which is also rich in the healthy fats. Also recommended was organic coconut oil and extravirgin cold pressed organic olive oil. I have used both with cooking, and the olive oil with the avocado and garlic (my doctor said it was okay to use) as a dressing for my vegetables. Almond butter is the bomb, but I am not allowed more that 2 tablespoons a day. I put it on my celery, apple slices, or cucumber slices for my snacks. I use unsweetened almond milk and coconut water with my shakes too. So far (day 15) I have had so much energy, and then some!
ReplyDeleteI start Monday. I am dreading horribly because of the no coffee mornings and the lack of food choice. Somebody remind me why to do this? Seems to me that the minute you stop you only put the weight back on. How are you guys maintaining?
ReplyDeleteHi there
ReplyDeleteDo anyof you recommend a doctor in Seattle area? I am looking fir the best for my daughter. Thank you.
Peg
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteI don't know about Seattle but I am in Vancouver Washington and I see Shelly Lafrance and she is just fantastic. I am also sending my daughter to her. I am on day 10 of the cleanse and feel better than I have felt in years.
Shelley
Hi Peg,
ReplyDeleteTry Bastyr Center for Natural Health on Stone Way No in Seattle. They are the teaching clinic for Bastyr Univ. Great place for natural health. They have a dispensary etc...I was very happy with my experience.

Any recipes would be helpful...for chicken breast?
ReplyDeleteAny recipes would be helpful...for chicken breast?
ReplyDeleteI haven't read a tje previous comments so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but when I made the shakes I blended them with ice and they were delicious and of course ice cold.
ReplyDeleteHi. I am wondering if the weight loss program is the same as the Detox. I did the 3 day with meals but breakfast but today is day 4. Shakes for B. and Lunch and three snacks and one dinner. Is that what everyone is doing for 1-3 months?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how long the fatigue and yucky feeling will last. I am on day 2 of the Opticleanse GHI. Any insight or experiences appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI lost 17 lbs in one month. It got easier, except for the all shake days! I like to chew. I felt great. I didn't slowly reintroduce foods to determine what my body didn't like after the 28 day period. I wish I had. That was my only regret. Maybe next time
ReplyDeleteHello! I've been on the diet for four days and don't mind the taste of the shakes, they go down easy and digest easy as well. I have already cut-out alcohol, coffee, wheat and sugar, so managing the food portion is not as challenging. For me this is a cleanse. I feel great and can only recommend eating good snacks like tuna, cut-up veggies and nuts. I cut out fruit for the sugar during this process, but you can eat some fruit, no bananas. I'm looking forward to the results. Good Luck!
